Case Study: A Trail Gone Cold
From Hitting Dead Ends To Uncovering Three Generations of Legacy – How We Helped My Client Reconnect With Her Roots
I’m so excited to share the story of one of my clients, a woman who came to me carrying decades of family curiosity and one stubborn genealogical mystery that no one had been able to solve.
Her Great-Grandfather’s Story - A Trail Gone Cold
Her Great-Grandfather’s Story - A Trail Gone Cold
For years, her family had tried to trace the roots of her maternal grandfather’s father…a man they all remembered vividly but could never seem to find in the records. He was a World War I veteran, a Pullman Porter, and a man with a famously sharp sense of humor and deep distrust of the government.
On top of that, the family surname was Jones. Which, if you’ve ever done genealogical research, you know is one of the most common surnames in America…and one of the most difficult to trace back.
She’d grown up hearing bits and pieces of her great-grandfather’s story as a man full of character, resilience, and contradictions. But with such a common last name, she found it difficult to know where to start. She was determined to seek out the truth, which became the spark that set our research in motion.
Our Research Process
Inside every package, we bring the full story of your chosen ancestor to light. By leaning on multiple research approaches, we dive into historical archives, online records, and oral histories to uncover a vivid, context-rich picture of their life.
Every package comes with…
Blend of Research Methods: We go beyond online searches and do in-person searches into archives, records, and research repositories from a range of historical societies and libraries.
In-depth Research & Analysis: We’ll do a thorough investigation into your chosen family line. We analyze each record and cross-check all the stories held within them.
Updated Pedigree Chart: We’ll create an easy-to-understand family tree that reveals the path from you to your ancestors. At one glance, you’ll be able to see how your family line has grown and the new ancestors we’ve uncovered and rediscovered from the research process.
Detailed Research Summary: The summary won’t be a stale report of facts, instead you’ll be given a powerful story and timeline that brings your family's journey to life. You’ll be able to bring this easy-to-read narrative summary to share with your family, at the holidays, or during your next family reunion.
Digital Archive of Documents: Copies of key historical records discovered. This may include: birth certificates, newspaper clippings, obituaries, a picture of a headstone, and more.
Final Review Session: A virtual sit-down session where you’ll be guided through our findings. This is a compassionate space where you’ll be able to talk through any questions, or get clarity on any findings we’ve shared with you.
Our mission is straightforward: we help you transform fragments into a meaningful story to pass down for generations.
The First Breakthrough: A Single Record That Changed Everything
For this client, we started by looking at birth certificates - but his census entries listed four different birthplaces: Oklahoma, Nebraska, North Carolina, and Arkansas. He had also provided different birthdates, even on his children's birth certificates (yes!) which made learning about his early life and his parents nearly impossible.
So, we moved onto digging into the official records her great-grandfather could never personally alter, like death certificates. On the record, we found that his birthplace was listed as Arkansas. We also found his complete birth date and his father’s name, though the space for his mother’s name was left blank.
It wasn’t much, and even this information wasn’t fully conclusive. After all, this man had spent his whole life offering conflicting details. There was no guarantee that the information on his death certificate was accurate. However, it was a starting point we could finally begin to follow.
What We Found: A Story of Hope, Migration, and Belonging
We dove into the 1880 Census and began to narrow our search. The goal wasn’t just to find a name match. We needed to locate a boy who was the right age at the time, living with a father whose name matched the one on the death certificate.
Using that father’s name (a less common one we’d taken from the death certificate), along with the Jones surname, we were able to zero in on the right family.
From there, we focused our search within the county in Arkansas where we knew a family reunion had taken place in the 1980s - a detail that proved vital to pinpointing the correct household.
It was an in-depth analytical research that required a specialized understanding of African-American family history. Genealogical research, especially when it comes to African-American families with ties to enslavement, is rarely straightforward. Names change. Records are inconsistent. Families are divided, renamed, or hidden within other households.
After detailed investigation, we found records of a boy in the 1880 Arkansas Census with the same first name, the same middle initial, and the last name Jones at the right age with a father whose name exactly matched the death certificate.
For the first time, we could place my client’s great-grandfather in a tangible family unit…as a child in a specific home, in a specific town, at a specific moment in time. From that discovery, the story began to unfurl ever further.
The census record revealed not just his parents, but his siblings whose names had never before appeared in the family’s oral history. It also confirmed something remarkable…this family had migrated from North Carolina to Arkansas before her great-grandfather was born.
That revelation resolved the mystery behind the alternating birthplaces of his great grandfather’s records. It showed that the inconsistencies weren’t lies or fabrications but they echoed a migration story that had stretched across generations.
Reconstructing a Lost Family Line
All of these initial findings were uncovered inside our Ancestor Package - our done-for-you genealogical research service where we dive into the history for a single individual and piece together a clear & accurate narrative of their past. But as fragments of his life came to light and exciting new details became revealed, it became clear there was much more to explore.
With this groundwork in place and a renewed sense of curiosity, my client asked us to keep going with our genealogy research. She upgraded to the Lineage Package, where we increase the breadth of research to trace your family line up to three generations back.
This allowed us to explore her lineage more comprehensively. We discovered details about her great-grandfather’s childhood to the lives of his parents and grandparents, and even to the enslaved ancestors who had come before them. It was in this phase of research that the story truly deepened.
We located records from the Freedman’s Bank, an invaluable source of post-Civil War data that often contains family names, occupations, and details of previously enslaved individuals. That single record helped us verify connections between fragmented pieces we’d found in other documents.
Piece by piece, we began to reconstruct a story that had been hidden for more than a century. We identified her great-grandfather’s mother (the woman whose name had been missing on his death certificate) and traced her parents as well.
We found the plantation in North Carolina where they had been enslaved, their journey to Arkansas, and how that migration set the stage for the family’s eventual stability and growth.
The Peace & Pride in Knowing The Truth
For my client, the transformation was profound. She received an entire reconstructed lineage, one that expanded her family’s story by three full generations, two of whom had been enslaved. She didn’t just find data, she found a renewed sense of belonging, continuity, and reverence for her roots.
The grandfather who joked and distrusted the government wasn’t just a mystery anymore. He was part of a long lineage of resourceful, determined people who had learned how to survive in a world not built for their safety. That realization was deeply healing for my client.
She said, “Wow Mica!!! This has been so amazing. Pops was always so elusive and we thought with a name like Jones we would never be able to learn about his people.”
For me, that’s the heart and soul of genealogy. It’s never just names and dates. It’s about uncovering the story behind the records and the narrative that connects families to their truth.
This project was a powerful example of how professional genealogy bridges past and present, helping families see themselves not as isolated fragments, but as part of a larger, enduring legacy.

That’s the power of professional genealogy: it helps you understand the past, reclaim your history, and in doing so, understand yourself more deeply.
Inside the Ancestor Package, this is exactly the kind of work we do. We spend 8 weeks doing deep analytical research, updating your pedigree chart, and creating a digital archive of documents of your one chosen ancestor so you can preserve, share, and celebrate their story.
And if you’re ready to discover your whole family history up to 3 generations prior, the Lineage Package allows us to extend that research and build on what we’ve found to identify earlier generations, enslaved ancestors, and migration histories, often reconstructing entire family lines that have been missing for decades.
We only need a few details to begin: a first name, a spouse’s name, a child’s name, a burial site, or DNA results. From there, our meticulous research links scattered breadcrumbs into a cohesive story…one that shows not just who your ancestors were, but how their choices, values, and resilience live on through you.
